From Youth Rugby to a Top 10 Collegiate Program: The Journey of Chase Brown

October 13, 2025

Chase Brown’s rugby journey started nearly 15 years ago when his father took him to watch Oklahoma play TCU. That day, Chase decided rugby was something he wanted to try—and soon he was at his first practice with Plano Youth Rugby.

By the time he entered Jesuit Dallas College Prep, Chase already had experience, making him one of the few players with a rugby background. He played across multiple positions—from fly-half to No. 8—before finding his home at inside center, helping Jesuit secure three state championships before graduating in 2024.

The turning point came after his sophomore year, when his mom allowed him to step away from football and pursue rugby opportunities. Chase discovered Next Phase Rugby through the Goff Rugby Report and created his profile as a sophomore. What followed was relentless effort: reaching out to programs, following schools, emailing coaches, and keeping his profile active. His consistency paid off—by senior year, Chase became the most-followed athlete on the platform, opening the door to countless conversations with college coaches.

Through Next Phase Rugby, Chase connected with more than 30 coaches, held 15 video calls, and received at least 12 Division 1-A opportunities. Ultimately, Mount St. Mary’s University connected with him through the platform. After conversations with the coaching staff and a campus visit, Chase knew it was the right fit. He committed during his visit and now starts at center for one of the nation’s top 10 programs.

But the transition wasn’t easy. “The toughest adjustment was learning to put my ego aside and stay humble,” Chase admits. “I thought I was going to run Mount, but I quickly realized there were bigger, stronger, and smarter players around me. I had to grow up, focus on work rate, and improve every single day. It changed from being a hobby to a job—a job I never want to quit.” Chase is now a sophomore and starting at center.

His advice to today’s high school athletes? “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Keep an open mind, visit as many schools as you can, and remember it’s not just about rugby. Look at academics, campus life, and the people. And if you’re on Next Phase Rugby—be active and be proactive. Don’t wait for schools to find you. Reach out, show interest, and keep putting yourself out there. That’s how real opportunities come.”

Chase’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset—and the right tools—high school athletes can find their place at the next level.
